Sunset 23 June 2016
Another fire festival has begun. The midsummer festival of St. John's Eve.
I've come across a description of one such night described by an old schoolmaster who lived in West Limerick which carried my initial impetus Irish/Scottish Summer-Harvest celebrations to focus on St. John's Eve or Bonfire Night. "... the fire used to be lit exactly at sunset and had to be watched and tended until long after midnight. Prayers used to be said to gain God's blessing on the crops, then at the peak-point of summer bloom." Special thanks to The Arts Partnership of Fargo/Moorhead and Jade Presents Grant.
An Samhradh (St. John's Eve)
Music & Lyric: Jillian LaDage
To high places
To holy wells
Hills O mountains we come
Hills mountains we come
Full first fruits
Our Summers wages
Harvest in the sun
Gather the sun
From marshy ground near River Deel
Flickers a flame
Flickering flames
Carried torches through fields we'd walk
To fullness on a Plain
Fullness of the Plain
