Instruments of the Celtic World: A Practical Guide to What Each One Actually Does

Harp, bodhrán, uilleann pipes, hurdy-gurdy, fiddle, whistle, tabla and oud — not a museum catalogue but an arranger's working guide to range, register, articulation and the frequency each one is going to fight you for.

Why an instrument list is really a frequency budget

Most writing about traditional instruments is organology: what it is made of, where it comes from, who plays it. That is interesting and it will not help you when you have a harp, a cello, a bodhrán and a voice all trying to occupy two hundred hertz at once.

What follows is the other kind of list. For each instrument: what register it genuinely owns, how it articulates, what it cannot do, and what it will collide with. Arranging in this idiom is largely an exercise in giving every voice its own band of the spectrum and its own moment to move, and the instruments make that easy or hard in very specific ways.

One organising principle before the list: this is drone music with melody over it, not chord music with a tune on top. Once you accept that, most arrangement problems solve themselves, because you stop asking every instrument to imply harmony and start asking it to do one job.

The harp: sustain, and the problem of sustain

Two quite different instruments share the name. The wire-strung clàrsach carries brass strings, is played with the fingernails, and rings for a very long time — the technique is as much about damping as about striking, because without damping the instrument turns into a wash. The gut- or nylon-strung lever harp is quieter, warmer, decays faster, and is what nearly every modern Celtic harpist actually owns.

  • Range. A typical 34-string lever harp covers about C2 to A6 — nearly five octaves, which is why it can supply bass, harmony and melody at once and why it so often ends up doing all three badly.
  • Articulation. Plucked, with no sustain pedal and no dynamic accent beyond finger pressure. Every note is an attack followed by a decay you can only shorten, never lengthen.
  • The constraint that shapes everything. Levers are set before you play. A lever harp is diatonic in one key at a time; changing a lever mid-piece requires a free hand and a bar of silence. Write your modulations where the harpist has a rest, or do not write them.
  • What it collides with. Piano, absolutely and ruinously. They share range, attack shape and function. If you have both, give the piano the low register and long tones and let the harp live above the stave, or simply choose one.

The arpeggio trap

The harp’s easiest gesture is a rolled arpeggio and it is therefore the most overused sound in the genre. The instrument is far more interesting played sparsely: single notes with deliberate damping, cross-rhythms between the hands, or a repeated two-note ostinato that the rest of the arrangement moves against.

The bodhrán and the frame-drum family

The bodhrán is a single-headed frame drum, historically goatskin, between roughly 35 and 45 centimetres, played with a double-ended beater called a tipper or cipín. The playing hand is only half the instrument; the other hand presses against the inside of the skin to change tension, which changes pitch and damping continuously as the player works.

  • Range. A fundamental somewhere around 70–120 Hz with a broad mid-range slap. That low fundamental is the thing to watch: it sits exactly where a bass guitar, a cello’s bottom string and a male voice all live.
  • Articulation. Enormous. A good player has a dozen distinguishable strokes between a dry rim tap and a full open boom, and the internal hand can bend a note like a tabla player’s.
  • In arrangement. One bodhrán, played well, is more than enough. Two is mud. If you want density, add a different frame drum with a different fundamental — a riq, a tambourine, a bendir — rather than a second bodhrán.

This is where the Middle Eastern side of my own work enters naturally rather than as a gesture. The riq (a tambourine with a remarkably sophisticated technique), the daf and the bendir are frame drums with the same physics and a completely different vocabulary of strokes. Putting a bodhrán and a riq in the same arrangement is not fusion for its own sake; it is two members of the same family being asked to do complementary jobs.

Uilleann pipes, whistle and the logic of ornament

The uilleann pipes are the most complex instrument in the tradition and the most demanding to write for. Bellows-blown — strapped to the elbow, hence the name, from Irish uilleann, elbow — rather than mouth-blown, which means the piper can sing and play, and means the air is dry, which is why the instrument can be so much sweeter than its Highland cousin.

The full set has four components: the chanter (melody, roughly a two-octave range from D4), three drones, and the regulators, a set of closed keyed pipes the player strikes with the heel of the right hand to punch out chords. The chanter can be played legato open or stopped against the knee for a staccato attack found on no other pipe.

  • The key constraint. A concert-pitch set is in D. Flat sets in C, C♯ and B exist and are prized for their tone, but they are not transposing instruments in the orchestral sense — a B set plays in B and that is the end of the discussion. Establish the piper’s key before you write a note.
  • Why ornament exists. The chanter has no tonguing and essentially no dynamic range. The only way to separate two notes of the same pitch is to interrupt the airstream with another finger. That is what a cut is; a roll is a cut and a tap around a long note; a cran is a series of cuts on a note too low to cut normally. Ornament in this music is not filigree. It is the articulation system.

The tin whistle shares that grammar in a far more forgiving package, and the low whistle in D — an instrument popularised only in the 1970s — has become one of the defining colours of contemporary Celtic recording: breathy, hollow, and sitting prettily an octave below where most people expect a whistle to be.

Fiddle, hurdy-gurdy and the drone instruments

The fiddle is a violin played differently. The bowing is where the tradition lives: short, rhythmic strokes, the bow kept in the lower half, a driving pulse rather than a sustained line. Regional styles are genuinely distinct — the rhythmic, double-stopped Donegal manner, the ornamented and slow-aired Sligo style, the bowed triplets of Cape Breton, which is also the fiddle tradition closest to my own family line.

Alternative tunings (scordatura) are common: AEAE and ADAE let the player keep open strings ringing as a drone under the melody, and that is the point — the fiddle in this music is frequently its own drone instrument.

The hurdy-gurdy deserves more attention than it gets. A rosined wheel, cranked by the right hand, bows several strings at once; the left hand works keys that stop the melody string. It produces a continuous drone plus a melody plus, through the chien or buzzing bridge, a percussion track controlled by how sharply you accelerate the wheel. One player supplies three functions. In an arrangement it is a whole section, and it should be treated as one: put a hurdy-gurdy in and take two other things out.

Drone discipline

Pipes, hurdy-gurdy, wire harp and open-string fiddle all supply sustained pitch. Two drone instruments in the same passage will either lock into something magnificent or beat against each other at a semitone of tuning drift. Decide which one owns the drone, and give the other one a reason to be there.

Bouzouki, cittern, guitar: the accompaniment instruments that are barely fifty years old

Here is a fact that startles people: the instrument most associated with the backing of Irish traditional music arrived in Ireland in 1965.

Johnny Moynihan brought a Greek bouzouki back from a trip, Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny took it up, and within a decade the Irish bouzouki had been rebuilt as its own instrument — flat-backed instead of bowl-backed, longer-scaled, and tuned GDAD or GDAE rather than the Greek CFAD. It is now so embedded that most listeners assume it is ancient. It is younger than the electric guitar.

That history is the best possible argument against purism, and it also tells you exactly what these instruments are for.

  • Irish bouzouki (GDAD). The tuning is the point: it is not a chord tuning, it is a drone tuning. The doubled D strings ring open through almost any position, so what sounds like harmony is really a modal wash with a moving inner voice. Played in DADGAD-adjacent shapes it supplies rhythm, drone and counterpoint at once, which is why one bouzouki can hold an arrangement together where a guitar playing chords cannot.
  • Cittern and mandola. Larger, deeper, slower to speak. A cittern is the right choice when the arrangement needs weight under a slow air; a bouzouki is the right choice when it needs momentum under a reel.
  • Guitar in DADGAD. Popularised for this repertoire by Davey Graham and then by players like Pierre Bensusan. Again a drone tuning: two D strings and an A ringing open, so the guitar stops implying major and minor and starts implying mode. Standard tuning fights traditional melody constantly; DADGAD stops the fight.
  • Piano and harmonium. Underrated. A sustained harmonium drone under a slow air is one of the most effective sounds available, costs nothing in arrangement complexity, and is what I reach for before any plucked instrument.

The accompaniment rule that took me a decade to learn

Accompaniment in this music should tell you where you are in the tune, not what the chord is. A backer who changes chord every two beats has turned a modal melody into a pop song. A backer who holds one shape for eight bars and moves a single inner voice has supported it. When in doubt, play less and hold longer.

Crossing east: tabla, oud, qanun and the frame of fusion

My own arrangements bring in instruments from the Middle Eastern and Byzantine world, and the reason is historical as much as aesthetic — the Celts were in Asia Minor, and the road between the two worlds was real. But in the score, the reason has to be practical or it will not survive mixing.

  • Tabla. Two drums: the wooden dayan with its tuned, pitched na and tin strokes, and the metal bayan whose pitch bends under the heel of the hand. The dayan is tuned to the tonic, which means tabla is a melodic percussion instrument and will clash audibly if your piece modulates. It gives you a fast, articulate subdivision layer that a bodhrán cannot, and it sits an octave above the bodhrán’s fundamental, so the two coexist cleanly.
  • Oud. Fretless short-necked lute, a fifth or so below the guitar, with a dry, fast decay. Fretlessness means it can play the quarter-tone intervals of Arabic maqam — and it also means it will sound out of tune against a lever harp if you ask it to. Use it for unison melodic doubling and for the taqsim-style solo introduction; do not ask it to play chords under a diatonic arrangement.
  • Qanun. A plucked zither with small levers that retune strings by microtonal steps mid-performance. Its register and attack are very close to the harp’s, which makes it the most dangerous instrument on this list for an arranger. Alternate them by section; never run them together.
  • Ney and duduk. Breathy end-blown flute and double-reed respectively. Both sit in the same register as the human voice, which is exactly why a duduk line under a sung melody is so affecting — and exactly why it will bury the lyric if it moves at the same time.

The workable rule for fusion, in my experience, is one imported instrument per texture. The ear accepts a single foreign colour as intention. Three at once reads as indecision.

A worked arrangement template

Here is the frame I return to when starting something new. It is not a rule, it is a default that is easy to depart from once it is in place.

  1. Foundation (40–120 Hz). One element only. Cello, bodhrán, or a low drone — not all three. If the bodhrán is playing, the cello holds long tones or rests.
  2. Drone (120–300 Hz). Pipes, hurdy-gurdy, sustained viola or a bowed harmonium. Establish it in the first eight bars and let it be the thing the harmony is measured against.
  3. Rhythmic subdivision (300 Hz–2 kHz, transient-led). Tabla, riq, or plucked harp ostinato. This is the layer that creates motion without adding pitch information.
  4. Voice (200 Hz–4 kHz). Protected. Nothing else moves melodically while the lyric is being sung. Counter-melodies go in the gaps at the ends of phrases, which is also where a singer breathes — the tradition has been solving this problem for centuries.
  5. Air (4 kHz and above). Bowed cymbal, finger cymbals, harp harmonics, whistle breath. Adds size without adding mass.

Build in that order, listen after each layer, and remove the last thing you added if the one before it got quieter. That single habit has improved my arrangements more than any other.

Rarely, and only if the kit player removes the kick drum or the bodhrán stays on rim work. They occupy the same fundamental and the same rhythmic role, so one has to give up something concrete for the pairing to make sense.

It is a fair question and worth asking every time. My answer is that the combination is historically grounded — Celtic-speaking peoples were in Asia Minor, and the trade in tunes across Europe never stopped — and that respect is shown by learning the imported tradition properly, crediting the players, and not using an instrument as scenery.

Write the melody in D, keep it inside two octaves from D4, avoid chromatic notes, and send the piper a recording rather than a score. Then ask which key their favourite set is in and be prepared to transpose the whole arrangement around it.
